An Insurance Policy For Your Career ?
An Insurance Policy For Your Career ?
Is there such a thing?
Absolutely. It's called lifelong learning. Commit to it and you'll set the table for professional success.
Never make the mistake of thinking you can sit back and rest on your laurels. The market is dynamic - and the pace of change continues to accelerate.
Skills can become obsolete very quickly. Jobs that were once plentiful can dry up. Technological advancements can drive nails in the coffin of one sector while planting the seeds to create another.
You have to be able to adjust constantly...to stay one step ahead of the game and think like an entrepreneur.
I'm not talking about enrolling in formal graduate studies in perpetuity. The sort of continuing education I'm referring to can be gleaned in any number of ways.
Bottom line: you need to be paying attention to your competencies and constantly broadening your skill set.
You need to know what you don't know. Then you have to determine how you're going to acquire that knowledge.
It could mean volunteering for an assignment that will provide exposure to areas outside of your current job description. It could mean signing up for a series of webinars. It could mean reading some books or finding tutorials online. And so forth.
Don't expect someone to take you by the hand and tell you what sorts of things you ought to bone up on...what's going to be "hot" in the next year or two...and then teach you what you need to know to develop proficiencies you're lacking.
It's up to you.
Wherever you are in your career - junior person just starting out with a company, in middle management, or a member of the executive team - you've got learning to do.
Your marketability depends on it.
